Weird Kid

  •   Van Eekhout, Greg. Weird Kid. HarperCollins, 2022. Ages 8-12.

Jake Wind is just a normal 12-year-old boy. Except he isn't just a boy, he is a shapeshifter. His parents found him after something fell from the sky. They describe, “According to Mom and Dad, I was a shapeless little puddle. Kind of like a big loogie. They didn't know what I was, or even if I was alive. . . Dad wanted to poke me with his shoe. But then I made a noise. I cried.” (Weird Kid 35). Taking place in Cedar Creek View, Arizona as Jake is starting middle school, he must do his best to keep his true identity secret. Weird things start happening around town, like sinkholes opening, people acting weird, and a hum that seemingly only Jake can hear. With the help of his friend Agnes, they must figure out what is happening in their town and if it is somehow connected to Jake’s origins. This is a great introductory sci-fi novel for young kids as the story is short and fast-paced, and has an interesting take on aliens. This science fiction book is targeted toward kids in middle grades from ages 8-12. The book is filled with humorous moments that will delight young readers and make them giggle. There are some cliches and at times the butt-jokes can be a bit much, but it is overall engaging. This work also has not-so-subtle references to puberty and not fitting in, making it relatable for audiences everywhere. We can all remember a moment when we felt different, and the author uses this to ground us in reality while sprinkling in more of those unbelievable elements. The heart of the story revolves around family and friends accepting us for who we are, despite our flaws. This book is funny and pushes readers to not judge a book by its cover without getting to know them first. It also highlights that you don't need to fit in in order to be accepted. This is a great read for transitioning and reluctant readers and belongs on the shelves of elementary schools.
