Review 1 - Tell Me About Oceans

This board book follows a father and daughter as they explore the wonders of the beach. It establishes a question and answer pattern between the protagonists with rhyme and repetition. Author Lisa Varchol Perron is a children's author who has earned the 2021 Boston Author Club Discovery Award for her picture book, while illustrator Jennifer Falkner is inspired by her passion in nature. Falkner also contributed to other books in the series Tell me about . . . and the Flashlight exploreres series. This book is targeted towards young readers who are curious about the ocean. In addition to the simple ryhme, the book contains factoids that further explain the science of oceans; this makes it a versatile read that can grow with the readers although some readers might find these factoids distracting or difficult to grasp. The illustrations are a standout in this book as they are full of details, color contrast, and feature protagonists of color.

Review 3 - Hot Dog

  Salati , Doug . Hot Dog . Random House Children's Book , 2022 . 3 to 7 years. Full of vivid illustrations highlighting this dog's adventure out of the city to relax, the distinct art style is sure to please both young readers and their adults. While there is some text, the story relies mostly on the illustrations to tell the story. Readers will be enchanted by the vast amount of details in the illustrations and were awarded the 2022 Caldecott award. The message teaches children that city life can be stressful, therefore it is ok to need to take time for yourself to recharge. It also reminds children to be mindful of how the city can affect animals and shows illustrations of the city as well as the beach escape. The illustrations are also inclusive and age-appropriate. This would make an excellent addition to any children's collection because of its highly engaging art style and universal appeal.
